KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Andres Reiner is a citizen of the world. He was born in Hungary, grew up in Venezuela and has lived in Houston since the late 1970s. But Andres Reiner is not a political man.

"My wife calls me a baseball addict," he says, "and I think she's right."

About the time the Soviet Union collapsed and the Berlin Wall tumbled down, Reiner was realizing his life's dream -- opening the first baseball academy in Venezuela on behalf of the Astros. That convergence was coincidental but harmonic nonetheless. Suddenly, the planet seemed as though it would be a less bellicose place. No longer would two antagonistic superpowers be staring each other down, a push of a button away from the apocalypse.

With the first and second worlds getting out of each other's faces, the rest, or third world, couldn't help but profit, right? Venezuela in particular, because of its sizable oil reserves, looked particularly primed to take a bold leap forward into the full flower of modernity, if only its leaders would stop lining their pockets with the brunt of the country's petroleum profits.

They didn't, of course, and the deeply ingrained corruption led the frustrated, impatient citizenry to turn to Hugo Chavez for salvation. But although the hard-left-leaning strongman president instituted sweeping policies of "reform," his medicine proved more unsettling to the Venezuelan system than the disease had been, and the most ominous fit of social unrest Reiner has seen in his 67 years would be the result.

Because of the fallout from the general strikes and massive protests directed toward the Chavez government in recent months, the nation's oil revenues figure to drop by at least 50 percent, and half the population could be unemployed by the middle of the summer. Understandably, crime is soaring, as Astro Richard Hidalgo would learn over the offseason when he was shot in the arm while being robbed.

So much for a stable backdrop in which to teach baseball skills, an avenue of escape for at least a few of the nation's impoverished kids.

Reiner, who just returned from a month at the academy, tries to stay positive. The irony of the unraveling situation isn't lost on him. He says Venezuelans' passion for baseball -- it's the nation's favorite sport by far -- never has been greater despite the angry mood of the populace.

"This is bad stuff, and it can still get much worse," he said. "But the more poverty there is, the more desperate people become to find a way out for their children."

Reiner's official title with the Astros since 1997 has been special assistant to general manager Gerry Hunsicker for international scouting and development. He came to spring training to counsel Hunsicker on how the organization should proceed in light of the uncertainties. A number of teams -- 18 besides the Astros have a bricks-and-mortar Venezuelan presence -- are in the process of or considering moving their players and staff to the Dominican Republic until normalcy returns. Therefore, Venezuela's summer league schedule remains in jeopardy. The winter league was shut down shortly after it began.

Reiner's advice to Hunsicker, whose mind is not made up: Ride it out.

"Even if there is only one other team to play," Reiner said, "I think we should stay. Safety is not an issue. The players and the instructors are safe. And there is no anti-American sentiment, not at all. If anything, the people believe it is the United States who will help solve the problem."

Which might become a problem in itself. The United States is a tad distracted by matters other than South American socialists these days, and you wonder how long the Venezuelans will patiently suffer on the back burner.

The Astros' facility, located within the secured confines of Venezuela's only privately owned oil company, Venoco, recently underwent a major renovation to rank it among the finest in Latin America and the Caribbean. Sixteen of the academy's graduates have risen to the major-league level, and Reiner believes as many as 15 of the current prospects living there have major-league potential.

Given Venezuela's population of 25 million -- compared to 4.5 million in the Dominican Republic -- the number can multiply exponentially in the years to come if Chavez doesn't act rashly.

"He could, you know, like Fidel (Castro), throw professional baseball out," Reiner said. "Will he? I don't think so, but ... "

Reiner measures his words when he speaks about the government, saying, "They could put me in jail."

And he contends Chavez "has done everything he said he would do. It's just that the people never once believed he would actually do them."

The Astros should know by the end of March if the Venezuelan season is a go or if they'll have to transport everyone to the Dominican. A referendum that could determine Chavez's political fate is scheduled for Aug. 19, but it's also possible the power-obsessed president won't allow it to happen because he's aware there are enough votes on the street to oust him.

Were he to block the referendum, things could get scary. Some warn of a possible full-scale civil war. Reiner discounts that "because the Chavez side has all the big weapons," but he concedes that as much as he wants to believe baseball will continue to grow and prosper in his adopted country, there are troubling uncertainties.

Ultimately, though, he's an optimist.

"I survived the second World War," Reiner said. "I will survive this."

On the floor of the Baghdad stock exchange, they are frantically bidding up shares in expectation of Saddam Hussein's removal.

The exchange is only 10 years old, but the betting is that Saddam will soon be history and the Iraqi economy will start to boom. Hotel stocks are in special demand: they could be fully booked for the first time in a decade.

The Baghdad brokers may be novices, but my hunch is they are on to something. As every day goes by, there is a growing economic case to get rid of Saddam. The costs of not having a war now exceed the likely costs of having one.

Indeed, this is one of the principal arguments for an invasion. After all, economic advantage always used to be one of the main motives behind British foreign policy. This is not to negate the importance of human rights or the risk of lives being lost, merely an unsentimental assessment of what is in our legitimate interest.

The world economy is on a precipice and the uncertainty created by the prolonged Iraqi crisis is in danger of tipping it over the edge. A downturn correcting the imbalances left by the 1990s boom was inevitable. But Saddam is contriving to turn this into a recession through his policy of prevarication.

Whatever else is in his armoury, he has fired a weapon of wealth destruction.

Yet The Daily Telegraph's Defence Editor, Sir John Keegan, believes a war is likely to be short. Iraq's conscript army and the Republican Guard are no match for American and British forces.

The most obvious damage caused by Saddam's continued grip on power is disruption to the world oil supply. Last week, light crude touched $40 a barrel in New York, the same level as at the time of the last Gulf war.

The Iraqi crisis has unfortunately coincided with a strike in Venezuela and a severe winter in the north-eastern United States. Traders are stockpiling crude in the expectation that Iraq will only drip oil on to the market over the next few months. Petrol could soon be 80p a litre. As a rule of thumb, every time the oil price rises by $10, it takes half a per cent off world economic growth.

But if and when we attack, Iraq's oil fields must obviously be seized. According to various newspaper reports, special forces have already been detailed to do so. It would be irresponsible not to. According to BP, about two thirds of the world's energy comes from oil and gas. Unless we want to turn the lights off and stay at home shivering, seizing Iraq's "oil weapon" is a prudent priority.

Naturally, France does not share our embarrassment over these things. Reports on the Energy Intelligence wire service say Total-Fina, which is part-owned by the French state, has been in secret negotiations with Baghdad about taking over the West Qurna field from Russia's Lukoil. (Stitching up the Russians in this manner could be a huge blunder from Saddam.)

But if Iraq's oil is secured and the taps fully turned on for the first time since the 1980s, the oil price will plunge. This will give the world economy an instant boost. Defeating Iraq will block the economic wellspring of Arab power and help dry up the millions of dollars that have found their way into the hands of so many terrorist organisations and despots.

It will also weaken Opec's ability to rig the oil price and loosen our dependency on Saudi Arabia.

It's not just oil. Like a desert saboteur pouring sand into a well, Saddam is jamming up the world economy by introducing friction into the system. Everywhere the appetite for risk and innovation is disappearing, to be replaced by despondency and fear. Consumer confidence has fallen to its lowest since 1998, as has business confidence.

According to a survey last week from the research group Martin Hamblin GfK, British consumers say it is the worst environment in which to make a major purchase since the early 1990s. Manufacturing investment has fallen to its lowest since records began in 1965.

By pulling in their horns, individuals and companies are merely behaving rationally. Saddam is cocking a snook at international institutions and undermining the authority of the West. He is subtly jeopardising the foundation on which all economic activity is built - security and the safety of property rights.

Each grain of sand that Saddam sprinkles into the system makes our prosperity more fragile, and people can sense this. If Saddam succeeds in putting off an invasion altogether, every other two-bit gangster will know they can attack the economic order of the West and its citizens with impunity.

In these circumstances, it is hardly surprising that stock markets are in such a lamentable state and the FTSE 100 index is now at half its peak. The market is saying that the outlook for trade, travel, investment and consumer demand is deteriorating.

However, imagine if Keegan and those cheeky Iraqi stockbrokers are right and there is a quick victory. The risks sanding up the economy will be blown away and confidence will slowly return. The oil price will fall. The authority of the West will be safeguarded.

If what happened in the last Gulf war is a guide - when the stock market rose once the shooting started - shares will start to recover. Indeed, there are those who say the rise could be euphoric.

It pains me to say it, but what this economy needs is a war.

Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y de la Asociación Americana de Psiquiatría (APA), el desorden narcisista de la personalidad se distingue por un sólido patrón de grandiosidad, tanto en la fantasía como en la conducta, necesidad de admiración y muy escasa empatía para los seres diferentes. En la personalidad histriónica el patrón es de excesiva emocionalidad y búsqueda de atención. El inquilino de Miraflores exhibe muchos de los síntomas de este desorden de origen orgánico, producto de una descomposición de su economía corporal y notablemente de su sistema nervioso, lo cual resulta en graves conflictos de su vida de relación. También es muy visible lo que técnicamente se llama dificultades de lateralidad; no hay psicomotrocidad perfectamente definida y coordinada en el uso de mano/ojo/pie (Ver películas de sus juegos de béisbol), no es ni consistentemente diestro, ni consistentemente zurdo, tampoco es verdaderamente ambidiestro, sino que muestra uso espontáneo y uso aprendido de uno y otro lado del cerebro. El disturbio es reconocible cuando son comprobados más de seis de los siguientes síntomas:

1. SENTIDO MUY GRANDIOSO DE LA PROPIA IMPORTANCIA, EXAGERA SUS ACIERTOS Y SUS TALENTOS. ESPERA SER RECONOCIDO COMO PERSONA SUPERIOR SIN LOGROS REALES QUE ATESTIGÜEN GRANDEZA. Se complace en identificarse como la reencarnación de grandes hombres como: Simón Bolívar, Jesucristo, Sucre, Gaitán etc. Su paranoia de persecución o peligro de atentados a su vida, es un falso mecanismo para sentirse un hombre verdaderamente importante. Piensa que va por el camino correcto, y cree que sólo él puede salvar la República de Venezuela. Exagera, glorifica y alaba al golpe del 4 de febrero; golpe que fracasó precisamente, por la falla logística del malcriado ex comandante.

2. PREOCUPACIÓN CON LAS PROPIAS FANTASÍAS DE PODER, DE BRILLANTEZ Y DE ÉXITO ILIMITADO O DE AMORES IDEALES. Desconoce el sentido del límite y no tiene noción de la proporción. Imagina ser un beisbolísta de categoría AAA, locutor, Catedrático suma cum laude, cantante, economista, experto petrolero, supervisor itinerante, tractorista, médico y conferencista Internacional. Se siente tan necesario que se cree merecer gobernar durante 20 años; tan fantasioso es Chávez que, desde sus días de cadete ya quería “Refundar la República”, crear un ejército Latinoamericano, y, últimamente, ser el Líder del tercer mundo y declararle la guerra a los Estados Unidos. ¿Con qué ejército?.. casi todos cambiaron sus uniformes por un delantal de buhoneros.

3. SE CREE ESPECIAL O ÚNICO, CAPAZ DE SER ENTENDIDO SOLAMENTE POR LOS “ILUMINADOS” Y EN CONSECUENCIA CREE QUE DEBE ASOCIARSE SOLAMENTE CON PERSONAS O INSTITUCIONES DE ELEVADO STATUS. Él piensa que de verdad es un Águila y califica a los demás como moscas. Por lo tanto, no hay Institución alguna que merezca su respeto. Para él, se deben respetar únicamente sus pésimos juegos de béisbol, y la alharaca de sus inútiles viajes alrededor del mundo para salir en la Prensa, retratado con la Reina madre, Putin, Saadam Husseín, Tony Blair, y mostrarles a todos ellos, la foto de Rosinés.

4. REQUIERE DE UNA ADMIRACIÓN CONSTANTE Y EXCESIVA. Públicamente, en entrevistas televisadas, se ha jactado de tener a toda Venezuela hablando de Chávez” y es inocultable el gozo que experimenta en tener a todo el mundo pendiente de él. Habla de sí mismo con supremo orgullo y persigue aplausos y atención por todos los medios posibles. Donde no hay público esperándolo no asiste. Para no soportar más pitadas se mandó construir un Estadio de Béisbol dentro del Fuerte Tiuna, y así, poder entrenar él con su equipo de gobierno, su (balurda) rabo de cochino.

5. TIENE UN SENTIDO DE BENEMÉRITO, DE UNGIDO, DE CÉSAR, ES DECIR DE EXPECTATIVAS IRRACIONALES DE SER TRATADO COMO FAVORITO, O DE RECIBIR INCUESTIONADA OBEDIENCIA E INMEDIATA SUMISIÓN A SUS ÓRDENES. Con su actitud autoritaria parece estar diciendo: “el soberano soy yo”. “El que manda aquí soy yo,... Rangel cumple mis órdenes”. Insulta públicamente a personas e instituciones que no son de sus afectos. Convierte en despreciables a todos los que piensen distinto a él. Habla altivamente y en un tono majestuoso: “yo ordené”, “yo decreté”, “no voy a dar marcha atrás”; y quiere ordenarle a los reporteros lo que deben ó no deben preguntarle. Quiere ser tratado como un Rey.

6. EXPLOTA Y MANIPULA EN SUS RELACIONES INTERPERSONALES; ES DECIR, SE APROVECHA DE OTROS PARA LOGRAR SUS PROPIOS FINES. Convirtió el referéndum para aprobar ó no la Constitución, en un concurso de popularidad, eliminando la posibilidad de que el proyecto de la Carta Magna, fuese analizado racional e íntegramente antes del voto. Esto significa que para él, no hay todo. Todos, como cuerpo social no existe. Un rasgo muy reciente de esta explotación, que raya en la maldad, es haber sometido a su señora “esposa” Marisabel, a las burlas del público cuando la mandó sola a asistir a un juego de béisbol, sabiendo que recibiría una pita, pues se lo habían advertido algunos de sus asesores. La pita por supuesto era para el ausente marido enconchado en la Casona.

7. CARECE DE EMPATÍA, NO ES CAPAZ DE PERCIBIR NI DE RECONOCER LOS SENTIMIENTOS Y NECESIDADES DE LOS QUE SON DISTINTOS. No encuentra resonancia entre los más capaces, y por la misma razón, siempre está rodeado de incompetentes, resentidos sociales, como él, y de tantos rapaces. Como quiera que: La personalidad narcisista -histriónica es contagiosa, algunos de su entorno familiar y de gobierno, ya han contraído la enfermedad. Ej. Tarek William Saad, Cilia Flores, William Lara, Pedro Carreño. Su carencia de empatía es evidente. No tiene amigos ni colaboradores, sino aduladores genuflexos cuya espina dorsal pueden arquearla unos ciento ochenta grados, y servir de alfombra a su comandante en Jefe.

8. ES ENVIDIOSO O SIENTE QUE OTROS LO ENVIDIAN. Durante la tragedia del Estado Vargas(16/12/99), se apropió de la generosidad de sus compatriotas y despojó a los damnificados, hasta de la gratitud para quienes les ayudaron en su desamparo, desconociendo el noble comportamiento de grandes y pequeños empresarios, haciendo sellar los obsequios de millones de personas para que fuesen entregados como: “enviados por tu Presidente, MVR “. Este mal ejemplo, es una de las más grotescas manifestaciones de la envidia. Chávez habla mal de los ricos, pero quiere vestirse como ellos, compra donde ellos se visten y trata de emularlos. En su reciente viaje de 21 días, al llegar a París, se hospedó en el Hotel Crillón (10.000 dólares la noche). Para variar, se compró un lote de camisas Charvet, en 28 Place Vendome, la camisería más cara del planeta, según Omar Lares. El humilde oligarca bolivariano de ahora, no se acuerda de sus Dorsays.

9. EL INDIVIDUO SE SIENTE INCÓMODO EN SITUACIONES DONDE NO ES EL CENTRO DE ATENCIÓN. BUSCA CONSTANTEMENTE EXCITACIÓN Y APLAUSOS. Sus excesivas, largas y cansonas alocuciones encadenadas a forciore, son la muestra más palpable de exhibicionismo patológico. En su único discurso, cita pensamientos y alude a escritores de la más variada procedencia, en un afán obsesivo por ser visto como erudito; algunos huérfanos mentales, en efecto, lo creen culto. Pero sus conocimientos de Voltaire, Montesquieu, La Revolución Francesa, ciertos poetas, y ni siquiera los de Simón Bolívar, resisten el más elemental examen objetivo. Consistentemente usa la apariencia física o el atuendo militar para llamar la atención hacía sí mismo. ¡Es curioso que el traje de camuflaje sea su preferido! (La palabra camuflaje, de origen francés, significa disfraz o trampa), por lo que el uso de los diversos atuendos, apuntan con precisión hacía el origen orgánico de los conflictos en su vida de relación.

B. DROMOMANÍA DE FUGA. Este término significa impulsión a la fuga. Por extensión, es la manía de tomar un avión a cada momento. La dromomanía de Chávez es nueva y aprendida. Comienza al asumir el cargo de Presidente, para el cual no estaba preparado. Paracaidista (su profesión)es una cosa y volar en Jet es otra cosa. La impulsión a fugarse del País en largos y permanentes viajes alrededor del mundo, es más que un estado neuropático un capricho infantil de gozo; una forma de venganza a sus carencias económicas atávicas. Por otra parte, su dromomanía no le cuesta un céntimo. La Patria está en deuda con él, cavila en sus elucubraciones. Además, él viaja en plan de “full Trabajo en cuantas cumbres se presentan”. ¡No es nada fácil recorrer trotando la Muralla China!... atravesar la Plaza Roja de Moscú, a medianoche y sin un Vodka encima.

C. MITOMANÍA Y PÉRDIDA DE LA MEMORIA INMEDIATA. Para Chávez, el mentir ya no es una práctica, es una compulsión. En esta modalidad se identifica con Carlos Andrés y hasta lo supera. Él dirá que no tiene otra forma de manifestar logros o cifras de su imaginaria revolución; esta es la causa por la cual nuestro energúmeno presidente evade el diálogo con la sociedad: teme que su reacción galvánica de la piel, lo delate como el más grande mitómano palaciego. En cuanto a la pérdida de su memoria inmediata, esto es un proceso casi siempre de un daño cerebral. ¿Y qué es lo que causa este daño? Los desequilibrios nutricionales en la infancia pueden ser un factor importante en algunos casos. Chávez dice una frase hoy y mañana no recuerda haberla dicho. Ej. “Un sólo voto que costó millones, salvó a Carlos Andrés”... Amnesia retrógrada. Hay una interrupción en los datos de la memoria a corto plazo a la memoria a largo plazo. Muchas drogas, aún las benéficas como los antibióticos, pueden provocar grados variables de olvido, al inhibir la síntesis de proteínas esenciales. El Poder enfermó más a Chávez y ya no tiene vuelta atrás. Bárbula lo espera im...paciente.

Señor Ministro de Educación, Cultura y Deportes

He decidido escribirle hoy porque me resulta absolutamente insoportable que usted se haya dedicado, en su afán de quebrar la voluntad de los educadores, a los que amenaza con despidos y les retiene sus salarios, a invocar el nombre y memoria de mi padre, el Dr. Luis Beltrán Prieto Figueroa.

El nombre y los hechos del Maestro Prieto, como lo llama y recuerda mucha gente en Venezuela y en otros países donde su ejemplo dictó cátedra de dignidad, constituyen un patrimonio colectivo de la Nación, que no puede ni debe ser objeto de apropiación con la intención de usarlos en bajas tareas de proselitismo político o, lo que es peor, tratar de desvirtuarlos en el camino de engañar o doblegar a aquellos por y para los cuales vivió.

Si usted, que fue maestro, dirigente gremial y compañero de partido de mi padre, hoy se encuentra ubicado en un campo ideológico que es diametralmente opuesto al que él defendió, ello no le da derecho a invocar el nombre ilustre de un hombre que dedicó su vida a los demás y nunca cohonestó un hecho de violencia contra otros seres y mucho menos, contra los maestros, a los que dedicó su vida entera.

Uno de los primeros trabajos escritos por mi padre fue un alegato titulado: "Los Maestros, Eunucos Políticos", el cual está dedicado a explicar las razones del derecho de los maestros a ser miembros de sindicatos, a manifestar libremente sus ideas políticas y participar en huelgas. Este texto es un pilar fundamental de la lucha de los maestros por su libertad y por la de la Nación y es, sin duda, una de las razones por las cuales se impuso el 15 de enero como fecha para celebrar el Día del Maestro.

Cuando mi padre y mi madre, junto con unos pocos educadores, se reunieron en aquel memorable 15 de enero de 1932, en el Colegio San Pablo del Dr. Martínez Centeno, para constituir la Sociedad Venezolana de Maestros de Instrucción Primaria, sentaron las bases para la lucha sin cuartel contra la dictadura gomecista. Por estas actividades ambos fueron perseguidos y despojados de sus cargos de maestros, tal como usted amenaza hacer con quienes hoy se empeñan en defender a la patria contra la influencia nefasta de sus malos hijos.

Esto último lo digo porque ustedes están tratando de imponer un modelo educativo basado en la experiencia cubana, en la cual se falsean los hechos de la historia para hacer aparecer al tirano como la fuerza fundamental de la vida nacional. Eso queda demostrado por el hecho de que, bajo la dirección de Carlos Lanz Rodríguez, más destacado como guerrillero y asesino que como educador, se esté imponiendo un "Proyecto Educativo Nacional" en el cual se glorifica, entre otros, a figuras siniestras como el "Ché" Guevara, mientras se falsean los hechos básicos de nuestra historia republicana y se intenta reconstruirla para hacerla similar al discurso irracional del teniente coronel golpista al cual usted ha hipotecado nombre y tradición.

El lamentable espectáculo televisado los domingos, de los niños recitando supuestas poesías patrióticas y arengas políticas que glorifican al pichón de dictador que, para nuestra desgracia, se encuentra temporalmente en Miraflores, es una especie de premonición de lo que nos espera. Pronto tendremos, como en Cuba, legiones de "pioneritos" cantando las loas albarbudo criminal y programas en los cuales Páez será un usurpador y no el que logró librarnos de la trampa bolivariana de estar sometidos a los designios de los neogranadinos y se inventarán virtudes para ocultar que Zamora era un terrateniente explotador y un miserable usurero, al cual mataron sus propios partidarios porque, sencillamente, no lo soportaban.

Esa es la educación que usted quiere imponer a nuestros niños, pero nosotros, como padres y abuelos, depositarios de la soberanía originaria, no estamos dispuestos a que una banda de facinerosos, encabezada por usted, nos robe el futuro de nuestros hijos en aras de un experimento político que rechazamos de plano.

Le advierto, de la manera más enérgica y categórica, en nombre de Luis Beltrán Prieto y Cecilia Oliveira, que siempre fueron enemigos de lo que usted hoy representa, que se abstenga de usar sus nombres y ejecutorias para falsear la verdad y desorientar a nuestra juventud.

Me consta, porque hablé largamente con él en febrero de 1992 y en fechas posteriores, que mi padre sentía profunda repulsión por Chávez y sus compañeros sanguinarios y rechazaba el concepto golpista y las intenciones de quienes querían subvertir el orden y conspirar contra la democracia.

No pongan ustedes en la boca de mi padre cosas que nunca hubiera dicho, ni lo usen para respaldar acciones que hubiera combatido, como siempre lo hizo. No confundan la actitud de un humanista y de un político convencido de que la educación es el camino de la grandeza, con un supuesto apoyo a sus ideas disociadoras, destinadas a asesinar el espíritu de nuestros niños y convertirlos en títeres de una dictadura tan cruel y malvada como el modelo cubano del cual ahora se sienten tan orgullosos.

The Observer should do its homework before printing a biased portrayal of an international problem that, because of the impending iraki war, could affect the US in the short run. At least, you could print two opposing views of the problem and your own Miami Herald could be a good source. Telling a lie a thousand times doesn't make it true. But that is what the venezuelan president and its international PR team are trying to do. Yes, Chavez was democratically elected, as well as Mussolini and Hitler were at their times. After having in the attempts while he cowardly hid behind. But he has delegitimized himself with constant violations to a tailored Constitution he had his National Assembly write for his interests. Venezuela lives in a permanent coup d'etat where there is absolute disregard for the division of powers and where only the whims of the president are heeded. The public administration posts, from top to botton, are filled with his cronies, family, former guerilla members and fellow military officers who have stolen record high oil incomes . Also, government backed terrorists roam the streets. He came to power promising to fight against the poverty and corruption that plagued the country, but those promises turned out being empty words. Their corruption, absolute ignorance and administrative incapacity have ruined the country. After more than four years in power Venezuela is poorer than ever , the basic needs of people are not met; hunger is widespread , medical care unexistent, and unemployment increases day by day. This is the man who prides himself as a friend of Castro, Lybia, Saddam Hussein, the Taliban regime, as well as an anti Jew. He poses as part of an axis of power against the US. A man who protects and gives harbor to the Colombian guerilla and the narcotraffickers. The man who said the Church was a tumor in our society. He wants to close television and radio stations, newspapers; anything that opposes his regime Today, Chavez is opposed by more than 80% of the¿ population, rich and poor, white and black and brown, unions, private companies, universities, churches, artists, intellectuals, the right and left, and all of them just want to hold free elections, NOW. But, he is afraid. One thing Mr. Blanco said is true. Chavez has changed PDVSA, the national oil company. The jewel of the crown went from being one of the top oil companies in the world to a third world corrupted and incompetent operation. What an irony that its CEO is a former guerilla member who is proud of having destroyed oil pipelines in the past. Petty thieves are in charge and bribes are the order of the day. Office equipment, laptops, scanners are sold for pennies. Environment violations are disregarded. Hordes of barbarians smash knowledge, talent and professionalism. Oil fields are destroyed. Mediocrity and ignorance are rampant. And for 80 years Venezuela was the safest and most reliable oil supplier to the US.
Yes, the country has committed economic suicide staging this general strike to force the president to accept the constitutional right to hold elections. Chavez is afraid of his own people, of the rejection most feel for him, because he is not a real democratic leader. He is just trying to perpetuate himself in office like any other third world dictator. That is the reason why thousands, millions of people march and demonstrate daily on the streets to demand what they are entitled to. Free elections and the right to live in peace and freedom.
